How can I create a inventory report from devices on my map?

I have maybe a strange request.  To help support audit and compliance reporting, I want to create an inventory report for each of my maps that I can export from the product.

I see that in the reporting interface I have a report that will export all devices, but how to do I create something on a site-by-site basis?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Richard - Great Question!

This can be achieved by creating device groups with the devices on each of your maps.   Admittedly,  this solution doesn’t scale all that well if you have 100s or 1000s of maps, but it is something that is quite workable.

Let me know how this works out for you!

  1. Login to the NetBrain End User Interface with an account that has the appropriate user privileges.
  2. From the main user interface desktop, create a new map with at least two devices.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key and click each device on the visible NetBrain map.
  4. Right-click on one of the selected devices, then click "Add to Device Group".

  1. In the Add to Device Group dialog, click the Add to Device Group drop-down, then select "New Device Group..."

  1. In the Device Group Properties dialog, input a name for the new device group, then click "OK".
  2. From the main user interface desktop, click the Start menu, then click "Inventory Report".
  3. In the Inventory Report interface, click on "Device Report".
  4. With the Device Report displayed, click the Filter By drop-down, then select the newly created device group.

  1. Confirm that the Device Report has been filtered.  The NetBrain Administrator can then review the information and/or complete a data export, if necessary.

Hi Jeff. I just gave this a shot on one of my bigger maps and I’m amazed it worked as well as it did.  This actually makes my reporting so much easier.  Going to try this out on the rest of the maps in my system. Thank you!

@Richard.Dunn and @Jeff.Notaro, there’s a short YouTube video about the built-in and custom inventory reports provided by NetBrain. There are Device, Interface, Module and Site built-in reports, which can all be exported to Excel. Here’s the link to the video :relaxed:

Hi @Richard.Dunn

creating device groups like described above will use static assignment of devices to the group. Any changes like adding/deleting devices will not be reflected, meaning you have to do the assignement again. @Jeff.Notaro please correct me if I am wrong.

Another way of doing it would be to create a Device Group and doing a dynamic search, using the search scope to select a site. Your nightly benchmark task can include the updating of dynamic groups giving you daily up-to-date groups.

Or you can use the Map Export function. When you select the MS Word format the document will include Device Configuration, Device Asset Data, L2 Interface Asset Data, L3 Interface (IPv4) Asset Data amongst other things. Unfortunately, the scheduled map export in the benchmark or using API does not include the Word format.
